[BLANK]

by ALICE BIRCH

This play offers the company the pick of 100 unnamed scenes to create a show that reveals love, joy and hope against the harsh backdrop of the UK criminal justice system

24-28 September 2024

“This play is a challenge and an invitation to you and your company to make your own play”

Alice Birch wrote 100 scenes, for both adults and children, that can be repeated, put in any order and presented however the company likes, so the possibilities for this show are endless. No two productions will ever be the same.

The play looks at the experience of women in prison as well as the impact incarceration has on their families. We see how the prison system affects those incarcerated, those who work within it and those who are left behind. The play certainly goes to some dark places but it would be wrong to see Alice Birch’s work as just a howl of rage, as she says, “I think kindness is really what I’m writing about all the time.”

[BLANK] plays at the Bridewell Theatre from 24-28 September 2024.

Performances on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 September will have open captioning. A captioned performance uses real-time captions to represent spoken dialogue and other important audio elements during the show. The visual representations of the spoken text allow audience members who are D/deaf or hard of hearing to follow the plot of a play or musical. Captions have also been proven to be helpful to hearing audiences.

This production includes discussion of sexual assault, description of murder and filicide, child neglect, domestic violence and blood. Recommended for ages 16 and above.

[BLANK] is presented by kind permission of Alice Birch.
